In Wild Light

I had a dream. Crazy dream. Anything I wanted to know, anyplace I needed to go.       -Page/Plant Led Zepplin

Below are the 6 Major Portfolios that represent my work. These Projects serve as placeholders, not only for single images, but together, speak in a larger voice for a more encompassing message. New images are often added, and old ones disappear, but “the song remains the same.”

Seasons in the Heartland

Seasons in the Heartland

The often undiscovered and usually underappreciated beauty of the land in my home state, Illinois, that still remains natural and wild is displayed in this in-depth project. A small lifetime of searching has uncovered a multitude of areas, throughout the entire state, some as small as a postage stamp, that are full of the wild components that once flourished in Illinois.

Expressions of Wilderness

Wisdom from the Wilderness

My love for big themes has always dominated my approach to picture-making. It has been a wonderful way to make a broader statement than just a single image can do. The loss of my daughter, Meredith, has left me searching for a way to dedicate my work to her. This portfolio is presented as a place to celebrate her love for the outdoors and some of our travels together. Themes provide pathways to a happier life for all of us.

High Altitude Paradise

High Altitude Paradise

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado stole my heart over 30 years ago. Daunting mountains, placid lakes, and intoxicating altitude.  In addition to my other adventures, I set aside 2 weeks each and every summer, to explore every possible niche of this paradise and after all these years, my park has become an old friend with many shared secrets.

Sweet Home

Sweet Home

For some wonderful reason, I have settled into the countryside of rural Alabama. The natural setting here is a fresh surprise. This state has amble richness to provide images that are both sublime with gentle restraint, yet at the same time powerful with their song. Be patient with me as I grow this new portfolio.

Northwoods / Wildwoods

Like many Midwesterners, I began my journeys to the “Northwoods” at an early age, with family, to escape the heat of summer. The timeless beauty of the thick forests, tranquil lakes, and wild rivers left their mark on me. As a photographer, I have spent the past 30 years visiting these wildwoods during all seasons. I continue to be touched by the limitless adventures provided for my soul as well as my camera.

To stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon is to stand at the edge of wonder. Most see the obvious beauty and walk away satisfied. Some, like myself, want more. I desire to squeeze the essence of life from the rocks, to grasp the flow of time as the light dances across the towers, and for brief moments, to find peace in the face of my monumentous insignificance.

Searching for Sweet Home

Published in 2021, Searching for Sweet Home is about our true home, ourselves, and the goodness that permeates our lives. Stunning photography from the Deep South is linked with thoughtful prose that encourages everyone to take a closer look at what it means to be ‘good.’ The images speak with soft and gentle voices that call attention to some of the finest hopes we should have for ourselves and each other.

High Altitude Paradise Book

The book High Altitude Pardise, published in 2015, was the culmination of my lifelong vision quest to visit all the lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park. I continue to photograph in RMNP with new images resting in the High Altitude Paradise Portfolio.

Staved Rock eBook

Starved Rock eBook

Starved Rock: 52 Weeks in the Grandest Canyons of Illinois.

The hidden canyons, spectacular waterfalls, and rich plant species make Starved Rock State Park a unique gem of the Illinois State Park System. One year, starting in January, I travelled to the park, one day each week, for 52 straight weeks. The seasonal changes unfolded before my eyes as I explored every niche of the park throughout this year long adventure. The result is presented in this eBook.

Wisdom from the Wilderness Book

Published in 2017, this book was a culmination of 40 years of adventures across the wilderness areas of our country. Much more than a compelation of photographs, limitless revelations as to the importance of nature in our lives as well as important lessons that seem be lost upon our children and their families in today’s fast paced culture. Lessons filled with meaning and messages. Most of the images can be found in hte Wisdom from the Wilderness Portfolio
